Responsible gambling means staying in control of how much time and money you spend betting, and knowing what protections exist if that control slips. This page explains the tools available to UK readers, what changes when a bookmaker is not part of GAMSTOP, and how to check bonus terms before you commit any money. You must be 18 or over to gamble.

What GAMSTOP is and why it matters

GAMSTOP is the free national self-exclusion service for online gambling in Great Britain. When you register, every online operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) must block your account and stop marketing to you for the period you choose. Exclusion periods are six months, one year or five years, and you cannot simply cancel one early.

Sites described as "not on GAMSTOP" are not part of that scheme. Most hold overseas gambling licences rather than a UKGC licence. Accepting British customers is not the same as being authorised to serve them, and a foreign licence does not give you UK protections. If you have registered with GAMSTOP because gambling was becoming a problem, using a site outside the scheme undermines the exclusion you set up on purpose. In that case, please do not use such sites; see the support section below.

Safer-gambling tools to set up before you bet

Whichever bookmaker you use, set controls first, while you are calm rather than mid-bet.

  • Deposit limits: cap what you can add daily, weekly or monthly.
  • Loss limits: cap net losses over a period, which is often more useful than a deposit cap.
  • Time-outs and cool-offs: short breaks from your account, from a day to several weeks.
  • Self-exclusion: a longer block on a single operator. It differs from GAMSTOP, which covers all licensed sites at once.
  • Reality checks: reminders showing how long you have been playing.
  • Gambling blocking software: tools that block gambling sites and apps on your devices, useful as a backstop alongside GAMSTOP.

Operators outside GAMSTOP may offer fewer of these tools, or make them harder to find. Check the account settings and the operator's responsible gambling page before depositing, and ask support how a limit increase is handled. UKGC-licensed sites must apply a delay to limit increases; elsewhere that is not guaranteed.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

  • Betting with money needed for rent, bills or food
  • Chasing losses with bigger stakes
  • Hiding your betting from family or friends
  • Reversing withdrawals to keep playing
  • Feeling irritable or anxious when not betting
  • Borrowing to gamble

Gambling is entertainment that costs money. It is not a source of income and not a way to solve financial problems. No tip, system or bonus changes the fact that bookmakers price in a margin.

Reading bonus terms without being caught out

Free bets and deposit bonuses can encourage you to stake more than planned. Read the conditions first. The offers below are as advertised by the operators and not verified by us as being available to every UK customer; conditions can change.

OperatorAdvertised offerWhat to check
TenobetSports package: 300% up to €3,000Wagering, minimum odds, expiry, cashout cap
smash250% up to €5,000Maximum bonus bet, sport contribution
Betninja€1,000 + 100 Free SpinsWhether it is a casino or sports offer, wagering
Gamble Gorilla100% up to £100 with £20 depositYou must deposit to qualify, so it is not free money
BetBluff100% up to £150 bonusQualifying odds, time limit

Key points apply to all of them:

  • Wagering requirements: a 100% bonus with 10x wagering on a £100 bonus means £1,000 of bets before withdrawal, and you may lose along the way.
  • Large percentages: a 300% match asks for a bigger commitment in wagering terms. A bigger headline is not a better deal.
  • Currency: several offers are in euros or dollars. Check for GBP accounts and currency conversion fees.
  • Expiry and caps: bonus expiry dates and cashout limits can remove most of the value.

You can decline any bonus. If you are trying to limit spending, a plain account without a bonus is often simpler to manage.

Money, withdrawals and verification

Only deposit what you can afford to lose, and use a method in your own name. Operators outside GAMSTOP typically still run identity (KYC) checks, and may ask for source-of-funds evidence before paying out. Expect delays if documents are unclear. Withdrawal times and limits vary, and we have no verified figures for them, so read the cashier terms and never rely on a quoted speed. Cryptocurrency, if offered, adds price swings and is harder to dispute.

If a withdrawal is refused, use the operator's complaints procedure first. Outside the UKGC regime you may lack access to a UK-approved dispute service, so recovery can be harder. See our terms and conditions for how this site handles information.

Legal standing and who may play

You must be 18 or over. Online gambling aimed at Great Britain should be licensed by the UKGC; Northern Ireland has separate rules. Overseas-licensed operators are not regulated by the UKGC, so GAMSTOP, UK complaints routes and UK advertising rules may not apply to them. Playing is not itself a criminal offence for a customer, but your protections are weaker. Licence claims should be checked on the regulator's own register, and we recommend doing that yourself.

Other products from the same sites

Many of these operators also run casino games, such as slots and live dealer tables, often from the same wallet as sports betting. A shared wallet makes it easy to drift from a bet into slot spins. Limits should cover both. Our non GamStop casinos guide covers that side in more detail.

How we approach this page

We research operator terms and public regulator information. We have not tested deposits or withdrawals, and offers are shown as advertised. Commission does not buy a higher position. Read more about us, or contact us if you spot an error.

If in doubt, pause

If you are unsure whether your betting is still fun, take a break, set a limit or speak to GamCare. Nothing here is worth betting money you cannot spare.
